liam blackburn s transformative night of visions lp as ancestral voices forged a bold new sonic identity for an influential figure on the electronic music scene. from his groundbreaking work as indigo and onto the success of akkord s hybrid electronic melting pot (with synkro), the quest for forward movement is intrinsic to everything liam produces. to further celebrate the night of visions lp release, we asked some of our favourite producers to reconstruct some of night of visions highlights in their own style. each remixer chose their own track from night of visions to work with. the first name on our remix list was swedish producer and northern electronics label head - abdulla rashim. choosing invocations , his remix focuses on the hypnotic power of the original, turning the tune into a golden loop with subtle kick drum stabs, sweeping percussion and a dangling tension that hangs through the entire 7.33 minutes. asc & sam kdc chose feathered serpent and using just touches of the original tune have masterfully built an all new backbone that demonstrates clearly the ability of the grey area sound to work at 2 different tempo s and weld together with straight techno.

the third release from new imprint dama dama, is another offering from label co-founder pedestrian, following the label’s well-received debut ep - ‘circadian rhythms’ . ‘pick your shots clean’ is a track inspired by this spring’s european dama dama label launch tour, which saw founding members pedestrian & maribou state take to the road, curating bespoke parties with back to back all night dj sets. as ever, the music itself is hard to categorise, but we would say that it sits somewhere between a rugged 90’s chemical brothers track and a 70’s arabian psych-rock record. the flipside - ‘airs & graces’ - serves as a counter-balance (a kind of yang to the ying of the a-side), that picks up where circadian rhythms left off, taking the listener off on a melodic 5-minute trip. currently gearing up to release a new signing in the dama dama camp, the team also have their sights set on the curation of festival stages, more intriguing night endeavors and a new mixtape series, all set for delivery over the coming months. pedestrian now with his sights firmly set on writing his debut lp, will be found at a number of festivals over the summer.

oona dahl joined us at all day i dream last year both as a dj and recording artists. her first release high eyes was featured on our summer sampler and floated onto the dance floor and into the consciousness of dj s around the world. oona studied sound design in the usa before moving to berlin over the summer of 2015 to continue honing and crafting her sound. her first full ep for adid features deep dreamscapes and innovative arrangements underpinned by solid grooves that capture emotive, twisted melodic expressions. she and her music are a trip to the depths.
recently appearing on the mighty crosstown rebels with a remix of shaun j. wright & alinka ‘face the truth’, sought after duo audiojack are back serving up a solid two-track release in the form of ‘turya’. turya is built for serious heads down sessions fusing subtle acid pads with soaring synths and sonorous spoken words. the hypnotic quality of the teacher’s words beguiles and entrances the dance floor, allowing people to lose themselves in them and its evolving groove. ‘event horizon’ is a different beast altogether, with a heavy drum and bass vibe, a four-four format, and a classic -amen- break beat style. in 2015 audiojack launched their sunday social free party at veto club in their home of ibiza, which after a strong season will continue this year. their first essential mix recently dropped on radio 1 and a string of highly successful releases and remixes on labels such as hot creations, tsuba, 20/20 vision and their own gruuv has solidified their place in the dance music elite. it’s safe to say that 2016 is proving to be a big year for the talented duo.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

after some remix projects and a lot of work on their new live set, the next original mix from saitezwei will be released as digital and vinyl release. also for this project, the two guys cooperatedwith the label tach & nacht from hamburg. the song is a mixture of deep and tech house elements with driving drum structures, saite zwei typical harmonies and a lot of variety. despite complex melodies and heavy chords, the entire ep has become very clubby and danceable this time. among other songs, the release will contain a remix of -morja-. the b side comes with an original track by morja called -reborn-. less melody, more groove could be the topic in comparison to his former releases. coming with a tight set of percussion and a phat forward driving bassline, reborn surprises with some contrary played organ sounds adding even more thrust and energy to the tune. definitely a track to remember. the side gets completed by an interpretation of saite zweis -nighting ale-.

one of the most accomplished and celebrated bands in the field of contemporary, unclassified pop music. almamegretta are masters in combining a wide range of elements such as dub, funk, reggae, world and electronica, all filtered through their own deep southern italian roots. the band from naples is now back with a new album, mixed by the dub master adrian sherwood, who had already been involved in their mid-nineties masterpiece “sanacore”. this new work consists of ten tracks, nine originals plus a well chosen cover of an old neapolitan hit by nino d’angelo transformed into a lovers rock style song. almamegretta’s original line up of gennaro t tesone, paolo polcari and raiz is augmented by a great list of collaborators and the result is a strong and multi layered set made of afro-funk numbers, reggae ballads, and other riddims, while the british dub influence remains central within the group’s wide sound palette. the title “ennenne”, which means no name, is inspired by the acronym used for those who are born from unknown parents. the right title for such a highly dense picture based on the combination of contemporary sounds and social topics.

(if any)think croydon and a few things come to mind, kate moss, punk band the damned, crystal palace football club, peep show and of course dubstep, the now world conquering music genre that will forever be linked to the south london suburb. what you never hear though, is any mention of tech house, another world conquering music genre. and to be honest we’re a little bit peeved about that. because if tech house has a spiritual home it’s croydon, and that is due mainly to swag records and the people that gravitated towards the humble west croydon record shop and studio.

so when stu gardner was rounding up a late night studio session, putting the finishing musical touches to a t.v production he had been commissioned for, he thought he would use the last few hours to record one more song. wow are we glad he did. “don’t fight the love” is making movements in the disco circles and with the modern soul boys. an unnamed female vocalist gives you the performance of her life! this had been sitting dormant until 1980.
summer deal! these two titles in the label’s catalogue carefully thread different periods in mosso’s evolution, showing the continuity of that personal sound defined by precise crafted percussions and playful melodies, appealing to the mind, body and soul. ! kander on the a side immediately sets the club pace with a rolling rhythm that serves as foundation for that classic mosso combination of riffs and counterpoints that build tension thru the song bringing it to an emotional peak before quickly stripping down back to the basics. the beat gently goes on, asking for the next ride of excitement. ! tikjda on the b side shows a similar beat, but we soon discover a completely different mood and tone. the percussions go darker, the meandering melodies become unstable and the timbres get nostalgic. a complex balance of north african drums, orchestra winds and drifting synths, build a song that proves as challenging to access as rewarding for those who give in and immerse themselves.

so wow... jiraffe - out’a the box. well what can i say, when i first heard this record i just melted... on the first few bars and the tempo already was a fav, my ears pricked up and then woahhhhhh... that bass came in and oh god how that went through my whole body and shook me like a thunderstorm... those synths and percussion just left me floored... probably one of the most cherished re-issues that you will buy... don’t know about out’a the box... if you don t already own it, you will and it will be in the box for a lifetime.

four new loose and beautiful metropolitan house grooves from prolific nyc producer j albert aka jio albert whose mantra (as always) is to keep it simple, and of course, keep it strictly j! in addition to the grime beats he’s been releasing on soundcloud under the dj osom alias, jio has also explored other genres with a recent black opal release and a 12inch on his own exotic dance records imprint. strictly j, though is his scruffy take classic house on zones more into the hot music-soho vibes. characterized by busy percussion, off-kilter downtown beats, stops and starts, scattered breaks, and weirdly breezy melodies, these tracks are roomy def down for the summer. interestingly enough, i was subletting jios room last summer in ridgewood, queens and was sitting next to him as he made some of these tracks while i worked my tech support job. he was listening to a lot of buddy rich, bill evans, and jeremy steig at the time.
